Parkland Walk

Scenes from my recent parkland walk this week.

Greylag and Canada Geese chilling out in a meadow, feeding on the grass and completing a spot of preening.

This is new, an Owl nesting box erected in a tall tree. Not sure if it will get used as it may be too prominent where it is. A likely alternative occupant could in future be a Kestrel.

Pied Wagtail having a quick look at me before flying off again.

A little experiment - by using 'Shutter Priority' and increasing the speed to 500 and spot metering, this darkened the Swan's background.

Mr Heron in the apply named Heron Meadow.

This poor shot below is the male 'Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly' (Ischnura pumilio).
I didn't know at the time that I had shot something rare and not until I enlarged it on my Mac did realise that it was so. It is classified as nationally scarce (hence the name) and exists in isolated colonies. I shall have to search the relevant area and look for more.

A female Brimstone butterfly feeding on the thistle flowers.

A female Banded Demoiselle.

A female Small White

This immature Robin will not look at his best until Spring next year, for the time being he is a scruff.{:)

A Green-veined White Butterfly

A Speckled Wood Butterfly (female I think)

A Common Darter (Immature male)

A Springer Spaniel practicing his gun dog techniques.

Only the second Holly Blue butterfly - I have seen this year.
It was one distant shot and he was off again.

Wheat nicely turned.

This lady on the narrow boat waved her cup of tea as she went by.{:)

    1. Thanks GG, yes you are right, it is a Teasel.
I tend to link all those sharp pointy things as thistles. They were thistles when I was a lad on the farm, but then I didn't know any better.{:)

  5. A lovely mixture there Roy and great photos. Well done on the damsel. I haven't managed a Holly Blue this year even though I have them in the garden and I haven't seen a Speckled Wood for months!

    1. Thanks Jan. Usually Speckled Woods are everywhere by now, unfortunately not this year.
